DIY Cleaning Products: Bathroom Cleaner

When we decided to start a family, I remember spraying down the shower with commercial cleaners, feeling light headed, thinking “what in the hell am I inhaling?”. I would turn the fan on, open a window, anything to air the place out. It was at that time that I knew holding my breath while cleaning and wearing rubber gloves was simply not the best way to avoid exposure to the laundry list of chemicals in standard household cleaners. That is when the purge began and our kitchen became a makeshift lab.

As with all of my DIY cleaning products, I have experimented with various combinations and ingredients. The powerhouse cleaner, Awesome Sauce, has evolved over the last several years to it’s current recipe (and only 4-5 ingredients). I love it and use it for just about everything. Awesome glASS Sauce is the simplified (if that’s even possible) version that is streak-free for windows, mirrors, and stainless steel. And this version, Orange You Awesome Sauce, is perfect for bathrooms and soap scum. Made with Citrus Vinegar, the natural Limonene cuts through the tough stuff like a boss.

And my favorite part is the short list of ingredients, most of them edible. I don’t feel like I have to hold my breath and definitely don’t have to wear rubber gloves to avoid skin exposure. And the cost is crazy cheap–$1 for 32 ounces.

THE RECIPE: Orange You Awesome Sauce
32 oz Spray Bottle

3/4 tsp tea tree oil
2 cups water
2 cups Citrus Vinegar
4 tsp gentle dish soap

1. Mix together in a 32 oz refillable bottle.  You can usually find these in the garden section or with the mops in the cleaning section of the store.

NOTES:
Do not mix vinegar with bleach–it will release chlorine vapors, which can burn your eyes.
