Making Essence Water
My primary beverage is officially water. I quit drinking soda a long time ago–I still have one now and then, but probably just a few times per year (so I really enjoy it when I do). I switched to sugar free drinks for a while, but then I removed artificial sweeteners from my routine. Aaaaagh!!! So that left water, tea, coffee–which I love, but sometimes you just want a little flavor. Enter fruit infused water–AKA Essence Water.
It is a simple concept. Cut fruit, put it in water, let it sit for a couple hours in the refrigerator and it’s ready. As you drink it, you can refill it with water a time or two before having to start over. It’s a light and refreshing flavor, smells very nice, and is just enough to make it seem much fancier than water. I like to pretend I’m at a spa when I drink Essence Water. Only this spa plays cartoons over the sound system and sprinkles Lego pieces around instead of rose petals. Heh.
Flavor options are as open as your mind. My rule of thumb is about a handful of fruit per quart of water. So, 1 sliced apple, 1 orange, 1/2 cup berries, etc. Below is the recipe for the one in the photo op. :)
THE RECIPE: Apple Cinnamon Essence Water
Makes 1 quart, refillable a few times
1 apple, thinly sliced
1 cinnamon stick, about 3″
1 quart water
1. Add all ingredients to a pitcher and place in the refrigerator. It will be ready to drink in as little as one hour.
2. Add more water as you empty the pitcher. You will be able to keep using it for 2-3 days depending on the type of fruit and how quickly you drink it. Just start over when it starts looking wimpy.
